A West Los Angeles orthopedic surgeon arrested in his office on charges of sexually assaulting three women patients pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles Municipal Court on Friday and was ordered held on $500,000 bail. Dr. Yahya Lavi, 52, was taken into custody at a private medical clinic at 11633 San Vicente Blvd. and booked at Parker Center Jail late Thursday night on 12 felony counts, ranging from sexual battery to rape.

A West Los Angeles orthopedic surgeon recently charged with raping three female patients was charged Thursday with three counts of sexual battery against two other women, authorities said. The new misdemeanor charges against Dr. Yahya Lavi, 52, were filed in Los Angeles Municipal Court, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Lydia Bodin. Lavi remains free on $500,000 bail after his arrest July 12 on charges of raping and sexually assaulting the three patients.

In an unusual disciplinary effort aimed at a physician, the state attorney general's office is investigating whether a Brentwood orthopedic surgeon recently charged with raping three female patients and sexually assaulting two others is fit to practice medicine, authorities said. The civil investigation of Dr. Yahya Lavi, 52, is separate from a criminal investigation of Lavi currently under way by the Los Angeles Police Department and district attorney's office, said Deputy Atty.
