It took nine years to erect the white stucco synagogue on Yorba Linda Boulevard once the zoning was approved and the funds were raised. But Rabbi David Eliezrie will soon preside over the congregation at the North County Chabad--the only temple for Jews who live in Brea, Placentia and Yorba Linda. The temple will "be ready for final inspection in two or three days," Eliezrie said. "Then, I'll breathe a sigh of relief." The timing couldn't be better.

A Quaker church's proposal to build a sanctuary as big as the behemoth Crystal Cathedral on its Yorba Linda property will not significantly damage surrounding neighborhoods, according to a study released Wednesday. The environmental impact study is expected to raise the heat on the long-simmering controversy over expansive plans by the Yorba Linda Friends Church.

A fire caused by a faulty electrical cord did an estimated $500,000 damage Tuesday to a clothing accessories business in a Yorba Linda strip mall, authorities said. No one was injured in the early-morning blaze that struck Ear Abstracts Etc., at Imperial Highway and Yorba Linda Boulevard. Some 60 county firefighters were sent to the one-story building, whose roof was left sagging, apparently weakened.

A security guard at a condo complex shot and injured a man who allegedly lunged at him with an object early Wednesday, officials said. Stanley Thomas, 40, a guard for Secure Tech, told police he was locking a door at the Villages complex about 2 a.m. when the man flung open the door and attacked him. Thomas Pham, 22, of Yorba Linda was shot in the stomach and taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana in critical condition. Police said Pham did not live in the complex.

The mailing the Yorba Linda Water District sent to 22,000 customers was succinct: "State proposes to confiscate $875,000 of your property tax revenue," proclaimed the flier, which went on to say that the loss would probably lead to a rate increase of nearly 9%, the largest in the district's history. Trouble is, state officials say Yorba Linda won't be affected by pending legislation that would divert local property tax revenue to ease California's budget woes.
