Yotel , a London-based hotel company that refers to its mini-rooms as "cabins," plans to open a 669-room hotel near Times Square in June. Like the rooms, the prices are pretty small too. The Manhattan site will be the company's first in the U.S. and the first located outside an airport. The deal: For those unfamiliar with the concept, Yotels offer basic rooms for travelers happy to trade frills for low prices. But that doesn't mean going without some cool high-tech amenities.

Yotel New York , which uses the term "cabins" instead of "rooms" at its Manhattan hotel, is offering rooms, uh, cabins for a limited time for $129 a night, a slim price for a night on the town. The idea of a stripped-down budget hotel with electronic extras originated in London and has been up and running in New York City since 2011. The deal: The compact Yotel at 570 10th Ave. offers a room for two - with a view, no less - for $129 a night plus tax. The deal is good for stays from now through March 10 and for July 4-Sept.

Tiny-roomed "pod hotels" have sprouted like button mushrooms around the world in recent years, encouraging travelers to sacrifice floor space for lower rates and micro-facilities. But Britain's new Yotel -- part of London's Yo! Sushi restaurant empire and a venue launched in June at Gatwick Airport's South Terminal -- is among the first to target airline passengers.

THE words "a tiny room" were painted on the Caltrans-orange door to Room 3.3 at the EasyHotel in London's Kensington neighborhood. As I swung it open, all 6 feet, 4 inches and 240 pounds of me worried a bit. Just how tiny was tiny? London is one of the world's most expensive tourist destinations, especially with the dollar still weak against the pound. Even the federal government, not always known for its generosity to traveling employees, allows $274 a day for lodging in London.

New Mexico This year, New Mexicans mark 100 years of statehood. But much of the state's appeal stems from its human history that goes back much further. (In 2010, Santa Fe celebrated 400 years of cityhood.) Explore here: the adobe architecture and art galleries of Santa Fe; the vintage signage along old Route 66; the lingering hippie vibe of Truth or Consequences. Don't forget the Lightning Field, an art installation outside Quemado where (for $150 to $250 a person) you spend a summer night in a wood cabin and wait to see if lightning will strike one of the 400 tall steel poles outside your door.
