NEWARK, N.J. - New Jersey Coach Peter DeBoer spent part of Saturday morning defending Devils captain Zach Parise. Sure, the Kings had held him scoreless through four games in the Stanley Cup Final. But DeBoer explained that "Zach's game is so much more than the stat line. He's the heartbeat of our team. He's the identity of our team. He forechecks, he back-checks, he kills penalties. " And on Saturday, he scored. Parise backed up DeBoer's verbal defense in effort and action.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The way these first two days have played out, the Players Championship could just as easily have been contested about 90 minutes up the highway. Call it the Frederica Golf Club member-guest. All that seems to be missing are their fellow Sea Island denizens — and who knows how many might be heading down for the weekend anyway. "We have a great crew of guys up in Sea Island," said Matt Kuchar, whose four-under-par 68 Friday lifted him alongside neighbor Zach Johnson — and "ringer" Kevin Na — after two rounds at TPC Sawgrass.

On the front line, Memphis offers a duo that few can match, the Clippers included. But for a good chunk of their Western Conference first-round playoff series, including Monday night's Game 4 at Staples Center, the Clippers have outmatched the Grizzlies in that area, bullying Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol into irrelevance. The Clippers took a 3-1 series lead with a 101-97 overtime win Monday, and Gasol and Randolph, who combined to average 26.2 points and 16.9 rebounds during the regular season, watched most of it from the bench, each saddled with foul trouble.

Reporting from Tucson, Ariz. -- Would LSU have beaten Alabama for the BCS championship this football season if Zach Lee were their quarterback? Lee laughed at the question. “It's all 'what ifs' you know?” Lee said. “You never know. We may not have gotten there if I was the quarterback.” The former two-sport star, who the Dodgers paid $5.25 million to walk away from a football scholarship at LSU, pitched in his first major league game Friday. The 20-year-old right-hander tossed a perfect seventh inning in the Dodgers' 17-4 thrashing of the Chicago White Sox, forcing two groundouts and striking out Jose Martinez.

" Johnson actually went right past them Saturday, using a dramatic eagle on the 18th hole to take a one-shot lead over Woods in the 18-player tournament in Thousand Oaks that benefits Woods' charitable foundation.
