Zagat Survey, one of the most trusted names in the field of restaurant recommendations, has elbowed its way onto the shelf alongside Leslie Halliwell, Leonard Maltin and Roger Ebert. The esteemed surveyors have just produced their first "Zagat Survey Movie Guide: 1,000 Top Films of All Time."

He's a dreamboat, and he wants to take you places. Ted Zagat is tall, dark and handsome. He's well-spoken, polite and has impeccable taste. And if you give him $11.95, he will show you the world. Zagat, 26-year-old son of Tim and Nina Zagat, was visiting Los Angeles from New York the other day, ready to act as a guide to the city's best bars, clubs and lounges. How would he know? He's just released the latest volume of his family's guidebook series, "Zagat Survey 2002: Los Angeles Nightlife."

It seems everyone is rating the airlines' service these days, and Zagat Survey, best known for its restaurant guides based on volunteer reviewers, is no exception. In its first airlines survey since 1998, issued last month, it ranks Midwest Express as the best domestic airline and Singapore Airlines as the best international carrier. Typically, its 31,500 reviewers offer candid remarks, such as "How about cleaning the jets once in a while?" (aimed at Greece's Olympic Airlines).

Zagat Survey, publisher of the Zagat restaurant guides, is set to announce today that it has received $31 million in funding from Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, Massachusetts Institute of Technology media lab founder Nicholas Negroponte and others. New York-based Zagat will use the money to expand its Internet operations and Web site. Other investors include General Atlantic Partners, which led the round of funding; Allen & Co.; former Microsoft Corp.

Pascal restaurant in Newport Beach isn't used to being relegated to second place in Orange County when it comes the Zagat Survey, a guide that ranks restaurants nationwide. Yet after being ranked No. 1 throughout the decade, Pascal Olhats' French restaurant slipped to No. 2 in 1999 behind Troquet in South Coast Plaza. But now Pascal is back. In the recently released Zagat Survey for 2000, the restaurant is tops once again.

If the 2000 edition of the Zagat Survey is to be believed, there is some serious food being prepared in Ventura County. This is particularly so in the Conejo Valley, where a few restaurants are ranked alongside some of Los Angeles' top-scoring eateries. First, some background: Each year, restaurant-goers can complete a lengthy questionnaire for Zagat critiquing restaurants they have frequented.

In the 74 years that the Michelin Guide has been awarding stars to restaurants in France, it has become so powerful--and its blessing so coveted--that restaurateurs regard the loss of even a single star as a calamity second only to the arrival of a McDonald's next door. Indeed, in 1966, seven months after learning that he had lost his only star, chef Alain Zick of Relais des Porquerolles in Paris committed suicide.
