The NFL will appoint a special counsel to investigate a locker room incident in which a reporter said she was sexually harassed by several New England Patriots players, Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Thursday. Patriot owner Victor Kiam said the team will cooperate fully. The reporter, Lisa Olson of the Boston Herald, said she was harassed by tight end Zeke Mowatt on Sept. 17. In an interview Thursday on CBS' "This Morning," Olson said the newspaper wants Tagliabue to suspend Kiam.

It was more than mere unsportsmanlike conduct by some clownish football players. Much worse. And so the most famous football incident of the season so far has occurred off the field--in the locker room of the New England Patriots. And now NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has had his say. With his ruling Tuesday, he put all players, staff, coaches and owners on notice: Women sportswriters have every right to cover these teams--and without sexual harassment.

Washington Post sportswriter Christine Brennan defended Boston Herald colleague Lisa Olson today, saying Olson's sexual harassment by several New England Patriots football players is "the worst I've ever heard in my 10 years of sports writing." "I've been in 500 locker rooms. I have rolled my eyes. I have laughed. I've had towels thrown at me. I've had whoops and hollers," said Brennan, who was the Post's beat reporter covering the Washington Redskins in the mid-1980s.

Randall Cunningham passed for a career-high 369 yards and 3 touchdowns Monday night to lead Philadelphia to a 24-13 victory over New York, the Eagles' first victory over the Giants in almost 4 years. With Philadelphia ahead 17-13, New York was driving toward a go-ahead touchdown on fourth and 10 from the Eagles 18-yard line, when Mark Bavaro dropped a 13-yard pass from Phil Simms. Three plays later, Cunningham connected on an 80-yard pass to Cris Carter to seal the victory.

The New York Giants said tight end Mark Bavaro will be sidelined for at least the first six games of the regular season because of continuing knee problems. Bavaro underwent knee surgery after the Giants' Super Bowl victory over the Buffalo Bills. The knee has caused him problems since it became injured during the 1989 season. Coach Ray Handley said that the team is considering signing former Giant tight end Zeke Mowatt, who was released Tuesday by the New England Patriots.

Rodney Hampton rushed for a career-best 137 yards as the New York Giants defeated the Phoenix Cardinals, 20-9, Sunday. The smooth sailing on the field came after a stormy week off it for the Giants (3-3). "We don't have time to worry about all the distractions," said Giant linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who early last week accused three-quarters of the team of not doing the job after a loss to Dallas.

The New York Giants had the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs virtually in their back pocket with 37 minutes left in the regular season and nearly let a Wisconsin pickpocket take it away from them. However, the right to host the NFC title game remained with New York because Phil Simms threw three touchdown passes to spark the Giants' biggest offensive outburst in 14 years and lead them to a 55-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers Saturday.
